Microsoft announced today that it will start pre-orders of HoloLens, its augmented-reality Windows 10 headset, beginning March 30th.
The first units are offered to developers who applied to purchase the HoloLens Development Edition and will cost $3,000 USD. Microsoft stated in its blog post that devices will ship to developers located in the US and Canada.
Microsoft’s HoloLens Development Edition is intended to be in the hands of devs looking to create games or apps and help build out the ecosystem, with a consumer device expected to be released at some point in time.
Last year, it was revealed that the HoloLen’s is set to sport an x86 processor, 2GB of RAM, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, supports Bluetooth 4.1, and a 60Hz refresh rate.
Unlike several virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Microsoft’s augmented reality headset is set to operate as an independent device, and won’t need to be tethered to a high-end PC. Multiple headsets can also reportedly be linked together locally or via the internet, creating what the company calls a shared augmented reality experience.
“With HoloLens you can create and shape holograms with gestures, communicate with apps using your voice, and navigate with a glance. HoloLens understands your gestures, gaze, and voice, enabling you to interact in the most natural way possible,’ said Alex Kipman, Microsoft’s chief evangelist for the HoloLens. “I’m really excited to start this journey with you. This platform was created for you, the dreamers, the creators, the Windows developers.”
