Dell Venue 10 7000, 2.3 GHz Atom

Dell Venue 10 7000 is at the cutting edge of the rapid innovation that has gripped the slate market in the last few months.

We have already seen some state-of-the-art slates in the likes of Lenovo Yoga Tab 2, Sony Xperia Z4 tablet, Dell Venue 8 7000 and Apple iPad Air 2. It is apparent from the trends that size and performance alone can no longer lead as the innovation for tablets but that application is key.

Dell Venue 10 7000 deliberately targets users that are after productivity tools and applications in today’s fast- paced business world.

Traditionally, Dell 7000 tablet series are always built with premium quality to entice business- oriented shoppers. It is therefore necessary to distinguish this particular model with the Dell Venue 10 5000 which is built differently and targeted for educational purposes.

That said, the Venue 10 7000 slate has a 10.5- inch OLED capacitive touchscreen with a clear resolution of 288 ppi. Thickness is 6.2 mm on the slim edges and the weight 598 grams.

It features a spine that is similar to the one on the Yoga Tab 2 but having its own novelty when it comes to usefulness. Unlike the hinged spine with a kickstand in the Yoga, the fixed spine in the Dell Venue 10 is for attaching an optional keyboard for use as a netbook. The spine has two slots at either end that are magnetic and which allow the optional keyboard to slide in and snap firmly into place. Because of this design mechanism, this particular Bluetooth keyboard is specific to the Venue 10 7000 and is not interchangeable with other keyboards despite the fact that the actual connection is made wirelessly.

Inside the bulky spine are internal components including the speaker and built- in 7,000 mAh battery that can go for 7 hours. Once the keyboard is fitted, the slate can be operated in multiple positions including tent and stand modes.

Many users might find using Windows or iOS platforms to be better for business but the latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop installed in this devise is refreshing to say the least. Performance should be fast to fit the device’s top notch billing on paper if the Intel Atom Z3580 quad-core 2.3 GHz processor is anything to go by.

Things are sophisticated on the side of the camera with an 8 megapixel primary lens and a less capable 2 megapixel frontal lens. The primary camera is fitted with Intel RealSense technology for 3D photography. This technology allows for advanced editing by enabling you to refocus images after they have already been frozen and blur parts of the framed photos for different emphasis. It also allows you to carry out digital measurements of objects including their surface area.

It was thoughtful of the manufacturer to announce that the Venue 10 7000 would come in two different versions. One with Wi-Fi only and the other supporting 3G and LTE cellular connectivity.

Although having a standard internal storage capacity of 16 or 32 GB, the memory card slot will allow exponential growth up to a maximum of 512 GB.

In conclusion, Dell has made a terrific product here that will certainly impact positively on productivity whatever your trade is. However, at a premium pricing and with the allowance provided by the bulky spine there should have been a bigger battery. Then again, with a bigger battery comes the extra burden of additional weight, not forgetting cost. This could most likely have been the limiting factor in the design.

Additionally, despite the fact that the keyboard is optional you will soon discover that it actually is a necessity if you are to gain maximum value from the device. In which case, this slate can be purchased with the keyboard as a bundle if you can afford the extra cost.
